A Return to the Grand Tour:
Micromosaic Jewels from the Private Collection of Elizabeth Locke

In 2019, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts debuted an exhibit of Elizabeth Locke’s life-long collection of 19th century Italian micromosaics. These antique works of art are shown in gold and gemstone settings that Elizabeth designed. In addition to the jewels, there are micromosaics in their original settings as well as objects incorporating micromosaics, which were highly prized souvenirs of the Grand Tour from the end of the 18th to the mid-19th century. The show will be in Richmond until September 2, 2019; from there it heads to the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina, where it will open in mid-January 2020.

To celebrate the once-in-a-lifetime honor, Elizabeth commissioned two luxurious silk scarves. Produced in Como, Italy, the scarves were designed by Thomas Zeitlberger of TZ Consumed Studio in Vienna, Austria who is known for his inventive and quirky graphic designs that mix images of actual objects with vintage illustrations. They are made of 100% silk twill.

If you would like to order a scarf, please call our office at 540-837-2215. The rectangular scarf in peach or blue is 71 x 9 inches and retails for $175; the large scarf measures 55 inches square and retails for $280.

Each of these items also is available through the shop at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. To see their complete offerings related to the show, go to the VMFA Shop.
